A Historic Moment Through My Lens: Capturing Black Leadership at Sea

Updated: Mar 6

For an aircraft mechanic, my name was surprisingly well known—not just for turning wrenches but for capturing moments through my camera. Over the years, my passion for photography grew alongside my aviation career, and eventually, I found myself being asked to document events that went beyond the flight deck.

One such moment came during Black History Month—a moment so significant that it had never happened before in our ship’s history. For the first time ever, every airwing command aboard our carrier was led by a Black Command Master Chief (CMC). This wasn’t just a coincidence; it was an alignment of leadership that collectively carried over 200 years of experience. These were men who had dedicated their lives to service, breaking barriers along the way, and now, they stood together, symbolizing excellence, perseverance, and the progress of our Navy.

When I was asked to take the official photograph commemorating this historic milestone, I understood the weight of the moment. It wasn’t just another group photo—it was a visual testament to the progress we had made and the path still ahead. It was a chance to capture history in a single frame, one that would be remembered not just on our ship, but across the fleet.

Setting up the shot, I could feel the pride in the air. Each CMC stood tall, representing the countless sailors they had mentored and the legacies they had built. Their presence spoke of resilience, leadership, and the unwavering commitment to the men and women who served under them. The image I captured that day wasn’t just about who was in the frame; it was about what they represented—a new era of leadership, a shift in history, and an inspiration to those who would follow.

As a photographer, I’ve captured many moments, but this one will always stand apart. It was a reminder that representation matters, that progress is real, and that history isn’t just made—it’s documented. That photograph didn’t just freeze time; it told a story of achievement, unity, and the power of leadership.

To this day, I carry that experience with me. It was more than just a job or an assignment—it was an honor. And for those who will see that photo in the years to come, I hope it serves as a reminder of what’s possible and the legacy left behind by those who stood for something greater than themselves.
